Inside the separation chamber, air drag on the objects supplies an upward force which counteracts the force of gravity and lifts the material to be sorted up into the air. Due to the dependence of air drag on object size and shape, the objects in the moving air column are sorted vertically and can be separated in this manner.
Experimental set-up. The flow investigations have been performed using a ZPS 100 air classifier mill (Hosokawa ALPINE ) as shown in Fig. 1. The mill itself consists of a rotating disk with 4 grinding pins at its periphery and an impeller wheel classifier integrated into the top section of the mill chamber.
