Ball screws make the machine too "slippery" to me for lack of a better term. There is no servo holding the screw on a manual and creeping up on a number is easier with the built in inefficiency of the acme. I did think it a great idea once, threw the ball-screws away and went back. Everyone on the floor hated it so dumpster bound.

Ball screws are required with a CNC mill. While CNC control is on the servo or stepper holds the screws tight all the time. In manual though the ball screws will move (creep) when not intended. The original acme screw has more hold on the non moving axis. So if you have ball screws you need to always tighten down the non moving axis.

I only got to use acme screws on a Bridgeport post using ball-screws. In my case yes i run mine part the time under Linux cnc control, its not a vmc, more just like another usefull function to add to a bridgeport, last week was profiling a 11 tooth 520 chain size sprocket, couple of days ago it was a nasty and repetitively shaped pocket cut out.
