This is a Jig that I have used on my courses for the last 5 years, it has enabled all my students, many of whom have never used a grinder to produce a flat and true bevel.
Although a convex grind on a knife may be preferred a flat grind is much superior for chopping on an axe and because of this it is used in racing and timber sports. Flat grinds are much better for wood which is why chisels and planes are flat ground and why a flat grind on an a axe is called a chisel.

Most axes have a 30-40 degree angle at the end of the bit and a 15-20 degree angle about ½" from the cutting edge. The bulge away from the end of the bit is what provides the axe its splitting power. Never sharpen your axe on a bench grinder as the heat generated by the wheel can cause the axe to lose its temper.
